Mike Lowell could be leaving the Boston Red Sox soon

There have been rumblings that the Twins, Rangers and Angels are holding talks with the Red Sox concerning 36-year old 3B/1B Mike Lowell. Lowell has played in 30 games for the Red Sox this year and he is 17 of 79 (.215 avg, .666 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 2 homers and 12 RBIs. Don’t let his struggles fool you as he has had a very productive career for the Red Sox. Lowell has now played in 569 games in his five years with the Red Sox and he is 615 of 2,105 (.292 avg, .823 OPS) with 275 runs scored, 77 homers, 360 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. Personally I think that Lowell still has something left but he’s blocked in Boston for playing time and he’s not happy about it. I see Lowell getting traded soon but I don’t think the Red Sox will get much back in return for him.

The Boston Red Sox need to move Mike Lowell

I think the Red Sox need to move Mike Lowell as his constant moping and complaining isn’t helping anyone right now. The Red Sox could use some relief help and the Chicago White Sox could use another bat. I’m thinking that the Red Sox could probably trade Mike Lowell and cash to the White Sox for righty reliever Scott Linebrink. That would be a move that would help both teams so it’s a trade that wouldn’t probably happen. With David Ortiz hitting again the Red Sox need to move Mike Lowell and the sooner the better.

Shortstop J.J. Hardy could be on the Boston Red Sox’ radar

The Boston Red Sox could need a shortstop for next season and it makes sense to give the Brewers a phone call. I’m sure an offer of Michael Bowden, Manny Delcarmen and Dusty Richardson would be enough to get the Brewers very interested. The Brewers need pitching and all three of those guys would be on the pitching staff for them in 2010 if they agreed to the deal. All three of those pitchers are expendable and J.J. Hardy is a good all around shortstop who would fit right in with the Red Sox. Bowden would move right into the starting rotation for the Brewers. Delcarmen would give them a solid righty in the bullpen and lefty Dusty Richardson would also fill a need for them. This trade makes almost too much sense to go down. The Brewers would also likely have to throw in a minor prospect to get this kind of deal done.

Rumors fly about Prince Fielder going to Boston Red Sox

The Milwaukee Brewers are denying that Prince Fielder is available, but rumors have began to swirl all over the baseball world about a possible trade between the Brewers and Boston Red Sox.  Both teams have not commented about the possible trade, but it would surely improve the Red Sox chances of getting another World Series ring.  The Red Sox would most likely give up Mike Lowell, as well as a slew of minor league talent, but is that enough for the Brewers to give up their top slugger?

The Boston Red Sox could be active in the trade market

The Red Sox appear to think that Jed Lowrie can handle the starting shortstop job in 2009. They have been discussing trading Julio Lugo to the Tigers for either Nate Robertson or Dontrelle Willis. The Red Sox would be smart to make this happen as the Tigers are hurting for a shortstop and they should take a flier on the D-Train. Robertson has not been a good pitcher in a while but Willis was really good just three years ago with the Marlins. If the Red Sox could straighten Willis out this would be a steal for them and the Tigers already seem to want to rid themselves Willis after 1 year.

The catcher situation will be interesting to watch. If I were running the Red Sox I would just let Jason Varitek walk as his game has really begun to slip. If the Red Sox can sign 1B Mark Teixeira which would move Kevin Youkilis to 3B then they would have to consider trading Mike Lowell to the Giants for Bengie Molina in a trade that would truly help both teams. If the Red Sox whiff on Teixeira then they should try to acquire Jarrod Saltalamacchia from the Rangers for Clay Buchholz. Buchholz might be a tad overrated but the Rangers would likely jump at this deal as they are hard up for pitching.
