The Boston Red Sox release Jeremy Hermida

The Red Sox have released 26-year old lefty swinging outfielder Jeremy Hermida. He played in 52 games for the Red Sox this year and he was 32 of 158 (.203 avg, .605 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 5 homers, 27 RBIs and 45 whiffs. Hermida was also a terrible outfielder as he made 4 errors in 49 games in the outfield for the BoSox and he made numerous other plays that were downright awful despite not being called errors. I have little doubt that Hermida will hook on with another team next year because of his age but the Red Sox won’t miss him one bit.

The Boston Red Sox ship Manny Delcarmen to the Rockies

The Red Sox have traded 28-year old righty reliever Manny Delcarmen to the Rockies for 21-year old lefty starting pitcher Chris Balcolm-Miller. Delcarmen pitched in 48 games (0 starts) for the Red Sox this year and he is 3-2 with a 4.70 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP. He walked 28 batters in only 44 innings for the Red Sox this year which was likely the final straw. Delcarmen pitched in 289 games (0 starts) in his six years with the Red Sox and he was 11-6 with 3 saves, a 3.89 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. Balcolm-Miller has started 19 games in A-ball this year and he is 6-7 with a 3.31 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP. He has only given up 86 hits while whiffing 117 batters in only 108 2/3 innings in the minors so far this year which shows you what kind of stuff he has. The most impressive number for Balcolm-Miller this year is the fact that he has only walked 20 batters this year. I really like this trade for the Red Sox as Manny Delcarmen just wasn’t getting the job done anymore.

The Red Sox have traded 21-year old righty swinging catcher Michael Thomas to the Rangers as the player to be named later in the Jarrod Saltalamacchia trade. Thomas played in 31 games in A-ball for the BoSox this year and he was 14 of 90 (.156 avg, .536 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 2 homers, 6 RBIs, 1 stolen base and 42 whiffs. Thomas played in 50 games in his two years with the Red Sox in the minors and he was 27 of 157 (.172 avg, .576 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 6 homers, 14 RBIs and 1 stolen base. The Rangers are planning on converting Thomas to pitching as he does have a strong right arm.

The Boston Red Sox release Ryan Shealy

The Red Sox have released 30-year old 1B Ryan Shealy. Shealy played in 5 games for the Red Sox this year and he was 0 for 7 with 2 whiffs. He also played in 32 games in AAA-ball for the Red Sox this year and he was 25 of 114 (.219 avg, .743 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 5 homers and 17 RBIs. The Red Sox saw enough out of Shealy this season that they knew he wouldn’t help them so they did him a favor by releasing him so he can find a new job.

The Boston Red Sox release Tug Hulett

The Red Sox have released 27-year old righty swinging infielder Tug Hulett. Hulett played in 86 games in AAA-ball for the Red Sox this year and he was 57 of 284 (.201 avg, .659 OPS) with 38 runs scored, 4 homers, 29 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. This is no big loss for the Red Sox as they have a lot of depth in the infield.
