45-year old knuckleballer Tim Wakefield has decided to retire from baseball. He pitched in 33 games (23 starts) for the Red Sox last year and he was 7-8 with a 5.12 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. Wakefield pitched 17 years for the Boston Red Sox, working in 590 games (430 starts) in which he was 186-168 with 22 saves, a 4.43 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. Wakefield retires as the Red Sox all-time leader in games started (430) and innings pitched (3,006). He is also #3 in wins with 186 (behind only Cy Young and Roger Clemens) and #2 in strikeouts with 2,046 of them. Wakefield wasn’t a great pitcher for the Red Sox in this career, but he was a solid one. He filled whatever role the Red Sox needed him to without complaining too much. For that, he should be commended.
