The Boston Red Sox sign Joey Gathright

The Red Sox have signed 30-year old lefty swinging outfielder Joey Gathright to a minor league deal. He played last in the majors with the Red Sox in 2009. He played in 17 games for the Red Sox in 2009 and he was 5 for 16 (.313 avg, .665 OPS) with 7 runs scored and 1 stolen base. He will likely serve they same role that he did in 2009, mostly as a pinch runner in September. Gathright has played in 445 games in his first 6 years in the majors and he is 309 for 1,175 (.263 avg, .630 OPS) with 177 runs scored, 1 homer, 96 RBIs and 80 stolen bases.

Ryan Kalish will have season ending surgery tomorrow for the Boston Red Sox

23-year old lefty swinging outfielder Ryan Kalish is officially done for the season as he will have season ending surgery tomorrow for a bulging disc in his neck. Kalish played in only 24 games in A+AAA-ball this year due to injuries and he was 21 for 92 (.228 avg, .585 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 0 homers, 11 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Kalish looked solid as a rookie in 2010 for the Red Sox as he played in 53 games in which he was 41 for 163 (.252 avg, .710 OPS) with 26 runs scored, 4 homers, 24 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. The Red Sox still have high hopes for Kalish.

The Boston Red Sox sign Trever Miller

The Red Sox have signed 38-year old lefty reliever Trever Miller to a minor league deal. Miller has pitched in 45 games (0 starts) for the Blue Jays & Cardinals so far this year and he is 0-1 with 1 save, a 4.19 ERA and a 1.91 WHIP. He has now pitched in 691 games (5 starts) in his first 13 years in the majors and he is 18-17 with 11 saves, a 4.20 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. The Red Sox will likely call Miller up when rosters expand to 40 tomorrow. They hope he can help get out some lefty hitters for them in September.

Josh Reddick’s bat has slowed down in August for the Boston Red Sox

24-year old lefty swinging RF Josh Reddick was ripping the baseball for the Red Sox until August. Reddick has played in 26 games for the Red Sox so far in August and he is 15 for 73 (.205 avg, .585 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 2 homers and 5 RBIs. He has now played in 65 games for the Red Sox this year and he is 54 for 191 (.283 avg, .803 OPS) with 33 runs scored, 6 homers, 26 RBIs and 1 stolen base. The pitchers have made adjustments to Reddick, so he better make some changes or he will likely start losing P.T. J.D. Drew has recently started a rehab assignment, so Reddick better get hot.

Franklin Morales is really looking good so far this month for the Boston Red Sox

25-year old lefty reliever Franklin Morales is starting to get his act together in August for the Boston Red Sox.  Morales has pitched in 10 games (0 starts) so far in August for the Red Sox and he is 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP.  He has whiffed 11 batters in his first 8 batters this month as he is starting to really trust his outstanding stuff.  Morales has now pitched in 24 games (0 starts) for the Red Sox this year and he is 0-1 with a 3.74 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP.  He has the stuff to be a dominating short reliever and it looks like he is starting to really trust his stuff.  The Red Sox stole him in a deal with the Rockies earlier this year.
