The Boston Red Sox DFA Mike Cameron

The Boston Red Sox have designated 38-year old righty swinging outfielder Mike Cameron for assignment. Cameron played in 33 games for the Red Sox this year and he was 14 for 94 (.149 avg, .477 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 3 homers and 9 RBIs. Cameron played in 81 games in two years for the Red Sox and he was 56 for 256 (.219 avg, .637 OPS) with 33 runs scored, 7 homers and 24 RBIs. Cameron was a complete waste of the $15 million bucks that GM Theo Epstein signed him to (a 2-year deal) two winters ago. The Red Sox have called up 23-year old righty swinging infielder Yamaico Navarro to replace Cameron on the active roster. Navarro has played in 34 games in AAA-ball this year and he is 33 for 128 (.258 avg, .831 OPS) with 25 runs scored, 5 homers, 13 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Navarro played in 20 games for the Red Sox last year and he was 6 for 42 (.143 avg, .317 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 0 homers and 5 RBIs. He only walked 2 times while whiffing 17 times for the Red Sox last year as he was overmatched by major league pitching. They hope that he will be better this time around.

UPDATE: (7/6/2011) - The Red Sox have traded Mike Cameron and a lot of cash to the Florida Marlins for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Kevin Millwood opts to stay in the minors with the Boston Red Sox

36-year old righty starting pitcher Kevin Millwood decided not to opt out of his minor league gig with the Red Sox. Millwood has started 5 games in AAA-ball for the Red Sox and he is 3-0 with a 2.89 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. He has now pitched in 8 games (all starts) in the AA+AAA-ball so far this year and he is 5-1 with a 3.48 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. Millwood has pitched in 411 games (406 starts) in parts of 14 years in the majors and he is 159-137 with a 4.11 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. The Red Sox are likely happy to keep a veteran with the track record of Kevin Millwood stashed in AAA.

It’s time for the Boston Red Sox to start playing Josh Reddick more

The 24-year old lefty swinging outfielder Josh Reddick needs to get more ABs in RF as the Red Sox are getting nothing offensively from that position. Reddick has played in 12 games for the Red Sox this year and he is 12 for 29 (.414 avg, 1.147 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 1 homer, 9 RBIs and 1 stolen base. J.D. Drew (.232), Mike Cameron (.154) and Darnell McDonald (.109) have been putrid in RF and I don’t care how much money they make, the Red Sox need someone who can hit a little bit in RF, so why not give Reddick a legit shot in RF? The Red Sox have little to lose in giving Reddick a shot to play.

Tim Wakefield has been really solid for the Boston Red Sox as of late

44-year old righty starting pitcher Tim Wakefield has really stepped up lately for the Red Sox. In his last six starts, Wakefield is 4-1 with a 3.60 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. Wakefield has only given up 28 hits in his last 40 innings and he is showing uncanny control of his knuckleball as he has only walked 12 batters. Wakefield has now pitched in 17 games (8 starts) so far this year for the Red Sox and he is 4-2 with a 4.26 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. Wakefield now has 183 wins in his 17 years with the Red Sox. He is only 9 wins behind the all-time leaders in Red Sox history (Cy Young & Roger Clemens).

Jody Reed was a solid infielder for the Boston Red Sox

Righty swinging infielder Jody Reed came up as a shortstop, but he played his best ball at 2B for the Red Sox. Reed’s best season came in 1990 with the Red Sox when he finished 18th in the voting for the A.L. MVP Award. Reed played in 155 games for the Red Sox in 1990 and he was 173 for 598 (.289 avg, .760 OPS) with 70 runs scored, 5 homers, 51 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Reed also led the major leagues in doubles in 1990 with 45 of them. Reed played in 715 games in his six years with the Red Sox and he was 743 for 2,658 (.280 avg, .730 OPS) with 361 runs scored, 17 homers, 277 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. Reed played his best ball in Boston as he wasn’t the same player after he left.
