The Red Sox have designated righty swingman Julian Tavarez for assignment. They will likely try to trade him to the Rockies who are said to be hot on his trail to use him in their starting rotation. Tavarez has pitched in 9 games (0 starts) for the Red Sox this season and he was 0-1 with a 6.39 ERA and a 2.13 WHIP. In three seasons with the Red Sox, Tavarez has pitched in 101 games (29 starts) and he was 12-16 with 1 save, a 4.94 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. The Red Sox have activated 1B Sean Casey off the disabled list to replace Tavarez on the roster. Casey has played in 17 games for the Red Sox this season and he is 18 for 52 (.346 avg, .906 OPS) with 6 runs scored and 8 RBIs.
