Daisuke Matsuzaka is living up to the hype for the Boston Red Sox

Daisuke Matsuzaka’s rookie season was up and down but he’s been lights out so far this season. In 10 starts for the Red Sox this season Dice K is 8-0 with a 2.40 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. He will need to tighten up his control if he wants to keep that ERA down as he has walked 38 batters in 60 innings this season. But, he’s done a real good job of missing bats as he has allowed only 41 hits in 60 innings this season. If Matsuzaka keeps pitching like he is now he might be a finalist for the Cy Young Award this season.

The Red Sox have placed righty starter Clay Buchholz on the 15-day disabled list with a broken fingernail on his middle finger. Buchholz has started 8 games this season for the Red Sox and he is 2-3 with a 5.53 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP. 23-year old righty Justin Masterson will be recalled by the Red Sox to start the game on Tuesday. He has started 1 game already this season for the Red Sox and he is 0-0 with a 1.50 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. Masterson has started 8 games in AA also this season and he is 1-3 with a 4.23 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. He has also whiffed 37 batters in only 38.1 innings in AA ball which shows that he has good stuff. But, it will be Bartolo Colon who replaces Buchholz in the rotation for the Red Sox starting on Wednesday Night. Colon has started 3 games in the minors this season and he is 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA and a 0.50 WHIP. Colon has been hitting the high 90’s this season with his fastball recently and he will likely get to keep the job as long as he is effective.

The Red Sox might bring up Bartolo Colon soon if any of their starting pitchers falter in the near future. Colon is getting the ball reportedly up to 97 mph in the minors right now. If that is indeed the case the Red Sox might have to bring him up soon or he will leave them as a free agent on June 1st. Colon has started 2 games in AAA-ball this season and he is 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP. He has whiffed 7 batters and only allowed 5 hits in 8 innings this season.

The Red Sox have designated righty swingman Julian Tavarez for assignment. They will likely try to trade him to the Rockies who are said to be hot on his trail to use him in their starting rotation. Tavarez has pitched in 9 games (0 starts) for the Red Sox this season and he was 0-1 with a 6.39 ERA and a 2.13 WHIP. In three seasons with the Red Sox, Tavarez has pitched in 101 games (29 starts) and he was 12-16 with 1 save, a 4.94 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. The Red Sox have activated 1B Sean Casey off the disabled list to replace Tavarez on the roster. Casey has played in 17 games for the Red Sox this season and he is 18 for 52 (.346 avg, .906 OPS) with 6 runs scored and 8 RBIs.

The Red Sox have traded 34-year old righty reliever Bryan Corey to the Padres for a player to be named later or cash. Corey was off to a rough start with the Red Sox this season. In 7 games (0 starts) for the Red Sox, he was 0-0 with a 10.50 ERA and a 2.33 WHIP. Corey had already been designated for assignment twice this season by the Red Sox so this will give him a good opportunity to stick in the major leagues.
