The Red Sox will look the same as last season behind the plate. It appears that 36-year old switch-hitting catcher Jason Varitek is starting to slip a little bit with the bat. In the last two seasons, Varitek has played in 234 games and he is 198 for 800 (.248 avg) with 103 runs scored, 29 homers and 123 RBIs. He still does a good job of calling a game behind the plate as Red Sox pitchers had a 3.80 ERA when he caught them. He also threw out 23% of runners trying to steal on him which is about average. The Red Sox will need to monitor Varitek’s work load as he is starting to look his age on the baseball field.
As long as Tim Wakefield is effective, Doug Mirabelli will likely also keep playing. The 37-year old righty swinging Mirabelli is the only catcher around who can handle catching the knuckleball effectively. Mirabelli has a career batting average of .231 (.724 OPS) in 566 games. He does however have the power to hit a occasional bomb as he has averaged a homer every 25.1 at bats over his major league career.
30 year old Kevin Cash even makes Mirabelli look like a good hitter. He has played in 126 games in his major league career and he has a CAREER batting average of .167 (.488 OPS) with 111 whiffs in only 359 at bats. Cash is a good defensive catcher and that’s why he’s still playing ball.
