The Boston Red Sox sign 3 players to minor league contracts
The Boston Red Sox have signed catcher Kevin Cash, infielder Keith Ginter and 2B Joe Thurston to minor leauge contracts. Cash is a defensive specialist who can’t hit a lick. Cash played in 12 games last season for the Red Sox and he was 3 for 27 (.111 avg, .390 OPS) with 2 runs scored and 4 RBIs. He has now played in 126 games in his major league career and he is 60 for 359 (.167 avg, .488 OPS) with 35 runs scored, 7 homers and 35 RBIs. He also has whiffed an amazing 111 times in his career which just amplifies the fact that he can’t hit. 31-year old infielder Keith Ginter hasn’t been in the major leagues since 2005 with the Oakland A’s. He has played in 325 games in his major league career and he is 236 for 971 (.243 avg, .751 OPS) with 120 runs scored, 38 homers and 140 RBIs. 28 year old lefty swinging 2B Joe Thurston last played in the majors in 2006 with the Phillies. Thurston has played in 55 games in his major league career and he is 15 for 58 (.259 avg, .631 OPS) with 7 runs scored and 2 RBIs. These were just depth signings by the Red Sox who will be in trouble if they have to use any of them in 2008.
